The Armed Forces Science Division was created as a result of the 1862 Morrill Act that provided funding for institutions having military tactics as a prominent course of instruction. In 1881, a group of students organized into a drill team, and a formal company of 36 cadets. The Department of Military Science was established at the University of Oregon in 1919. The school had sponsored military training through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program before the creation of a Military Science department.
